Last week-end I was sorting through bags of old stuff that I don’t use anymore to see what I might throw out or give away and I came across a plastic bag full of tribal ornaments and kuchi coins that I’d bought years ago to sew on tribal dance costumes. I’m no longer making dance costumes (at least not tribal ones) and I’m really not expecting a visit from Jack Sparrow either, so I was about to throw the ornaments out…. but at the last minute I changed my mind and decided to hang on to them. I have a weak spot for dangly sparkly trinkets so I searched around for another use for them. I decided to display them. I dusted off an old antique Persian tray that I had in a cupboard and arranged them on the tray.
There were cowrie shells and many old silver coins from faraway lands, Kuchi pendants from Afghanistan and Rajasthan, silver bedouin ankle bracelets from the arabian gulf. Crescent shaped earrings from Egypt and a Hamsa loaded with evil eye talismans from Turkey.
Tucked under a little moroccan style table along with other middle eastern objects, they were right at home.
I know I still have more bags of tribal stuff stored away somewhere, I think this tray’s going to end up pretty full.
Those kuchi dangles sure look good on Jack, don’t they?
